Flooding possible overnight; more flooding potential this weekend

AUSTIN, Texas — You’ll want to keep your umbrella nearby as we track a wet week ahead for Central Texas.

Localized flooding will be possible this evening and overnight along and east of the I-35 corridor. The highest flood potential will be across Bastrop, Caldwell, Lee, and Fayette counties where we expect a widespread round of slow moving downpours to develop overnight through Wednesday morning. 

We get a quick break in the rain chances for Wednesday afternoon and Thursday, before widespread rain chances return for Friday and Mother’s Day weekend. This is when we will experience the highest flooding potential of the week. 

Friday night and Saturday especially will bring widespread rain and storms capable of torrential rain and flooding. The Weather Prediction Center currently includes the Hill Country and southern I-35 corridor in the ‘moderate’ risk for flash flooding. 

We expect the highest rainfall totals along and west of the I-35 corridor. We are hopeful that this will make a big dent in our drought and hopefully help our highland lakes, but this comes along with the risk for flooding. 

We are currently expecting a widespread 5″-8″+ of rain over the next 7 days for the Hill Country. Rain chances may even continue into the first half of next week. The KVUE Weather Team will keep a close eye on the forecast.
